Polish migration to Michigan City started in the 1870's and continued through the 1890's. Many Polish people, attracted to Michigan City by factory and dock jobs, settled on the south and southwest sides of the city.
The first Polish immigrants were members of the predominantly-German St. Mary's Catholic Church, but friction soon developed between the two nationalities. The bishop gave the Poles permission to form their own parish in 1891, with the Rev. Emmanuel Wrobel as pastor. The energetic Polish immigrants, under Father Wrobel's leadership, wasted no time once they had their own church.
A parish plant was built in 1891, with a two-story combination building on the corner of Washington and Ripley streets serving as a church, school and Sister's convent.
